I merely wanted to say that it's nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere. This was the first place that told me the answer. Thanks.

thanks for the write up. This has been a pain for me for a long time as a developer. I wish the client knows how hard it is to send an email!

Gotcha. Yea - authsmtp will solve lots of mail problems, although you still have the hassle of building HTML for email (which is beyond the scope of the thread obviously, and not trivial). Authsmtp is an essential when on Amazon's IPs, so it's a superb service to your customers. Nice!

If you notice, for our Engine Yard Cloud customers we recommend that they use authsmtp, or sendgrid. Would love to chat about your own company's service which is profiled in the article you recommend above.

I agree with @redsquirrel. If you're into time consuming, error prone tasks, attempt the above manual. While these instructions are valuable, there are some some oversimplifications when it talks about blacklists and related areas. Sitting an analyzing a deferral queue or SMTP log to see where blocks are can take hours. Communicating with AOL and Gmail is a pain, takes forever. Feedback loops, DKIM, Domain Keys, SPF etc. can be a nightmare. In fact, Hotmail and AOL look at open rates, Gmail looks at the domains in your emails and assesses a reputation score. Obfuscated Whois records will block you in SpamAssassin's networks, while major dnsbl's like Baracuda have a paid whitelisting service. Joining the MSN JMR program requires signing physical contracts and getting your ISP/Network provider the email their staff directly. Seriously, do yourself a favor: http://www.pragprog.com/magazines

See the "Mail on Rails" article in yesterday's PragPub magazine http://www.pragprog.com/magazines if you'd rather outsource your email delivery than spend the time (aka money) on this sort of stuff.
